Advice for managing eating disorders over Christmas

Specialists at Bramacare, a transitional eating disorder service based in Ipswich, have shared their advice for managing eating disorders over the Christmas period.

With its focus on food and indulgence, Christmas can be a challenging time for adults who struggle with eating disorders like anorexia nervosa or bulimia, especially those who are on their journey towards recovery.

Elizabeth Bennett, Rehabilitation Manager at Bramacare, has shared her expert advice to help adults manage their eating disorder over the festive period.

Elizabeth said: “Christmas time can be a struggle with different foods and not knowing what you are going to be eating day-to-day. My advice is to pre-plan meals where possible, so you know what to expect and when.

“Take time for yourself each day and make use of any grounding exercises that you know work for you, such as journaling or art therapy. It’s also really important to turn to your family and loved ones for support when you are struggling as they will want to help and be there for you. You can also call B-eat charity helpline on 0808 801 0677.

“Remind your friends and family that there are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ foods throughout the festive period and if you can, avoid talking about food.

“Finally, make sure that you plan things to do in the festive period that genuinely make you happy and are not focused around food. Enjoy your hobbies, spend time with those who love and support you and try to have the best Christmas that you can.” Bramacare offers specialist residential, nursing and day care for adults with eating disorders at its centres in Ipswich. Many of Bramacare’s patients return home during Christmas but the team continue to offer support and regular check-ins for individuals, as well as advice for families.
