Bramacare turn the spotlight on eating disorders during Mental Health Awareness Week

Ipswich-based Eating disorder rehabilitation service, Bramacare, are encouraging people to learn more about eating disorders and their devastating impact as part of Mental Health Awareness Week (15-21 May 2023). It is estimated that 1.25 million people in the UK currently have an eating disorder (ref: Beat, 2022) and it often leads to or is a result of other health or psychiatric issues.

Dr Sachindev Ramoo is Director at Bramacare and also a local GP. Dr Ramoo said: “Sadly, eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia continue to have one of the highest mortality rates in all mental health conditions.

“There are a lot of misconceptions which can make it difficult to diagnose an eating disorder, for example both men and women can be affected, and they may have a normal weight with no physical changes.

Signs of an eating disorder can be obsession over food and mealtimes, behavioural changes, tiredness, distorted opinion of their body image, or excessive exercise. For the best chance of recovery, it is vital that those with an eating disorder receive an early diagnosis and specialist support.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a great opportunity to stop and take notice of you and your loved one’s mental state. If you, or someone you know, could be struggling with an eating disorder, we urge you to contact your GP and use trusted resources from charities like Beat, who can guide you towards finding the right help.”

Bramacare offers a range of community support for people diagnosed with an eating disorder; specialist day care support in Ipswich town centre, Residential care in local apartments, and Nursing care at The White House, in North Ipswich.
