Stress Awareness Day 2023: Positive coping strategies are key for managing stress

On National Stress Awareness Day (2nd November), Bramacare is reflecting on the impact of stress on those with mental health conditions, and encouraging people to find their own positive coping strategies as a key for managing stress.

Bramacare is a specialist medical care and rehabilitation service for adults with eating disorders and disordered eating. The Bramacare team of healthcare professionals and therapists support service users to identify and manage stress in their daily lives, and to limit the impact of stress on their eating disorder and overall mental health.

Dr Ramoo, Director at Bramacare and GP, said: “Stress is a part of everyday life and, while it can be a good motivator, it’s important to monitor and identify coping strategies for stress to avoid it taking a negative toll on your mental and physical health.

“For those with an eating disorder or disordered eating, it can be stressful to hear or see negative body image portrayal on social media and magazines. Daily activities like cooking, meal planning and grocery shopping can also be very challenging. We work individually with our service users to help them identify their triggers and to set goals and techniques for managing stress.

“Our advice is to check in with yourself regularly, understand what your norm is and find calming, restorative activities to help you balance stress day-to-day. At Bramacare we support service users with anxiety management, depression awareness, group activities and relaxation techniques such as art and wellbeing, mindfulness, creative writing and equine therapy.”

Bramacare Community is currently hosting free wellbeing activities to support adults in the Suffolk community who have an eating disorder or disordered eating, including group art sessions, mindfulness and creative writing.
